The Gender Wage Gap in San Francisco
In 2017, median earnings for men in the San Francisco metro area were $76,502 compared with $63,306 for women — an earnings ratio of just 83 percent. And for most women, the pay gap is wider. While San Francisco has a smaller gender pay gap than most states do, a 16 percent gap is still far from gender parity.
Closing the gender wage gap can mean the difference between living above or below the poverty line and the existence of the gender pay gap means women and their families have less money to support themselves, save and invest for the future, and spend on goods and services. As women increasingly become the primary breadwinners at home, eliminating the gender pay gap would translate in significant benefits for families, businesses, and the economy.
Funded in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Annually, AAUW publishes “The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap,” which explains that women working full time in the United States typically are paid just 80 percent of what white men are paid, a gap of 20 percent — and it’s even worse for women of color in San Francisco:
Asian American women are paid $.65 compared to men (white, non-Hispanic)
African American women are paid $.51 compared to men (white, non-Hispanic)
American Indian women are paid $.60 compared to men (white, non-Hispanic)
Alaskan Native women are paid $.60 compared to men (white, non-Hispanic)
Hispanic women are paid $.40 compared to men (white, non-Hispanic)
Taking Action to Close the Gender Wage Gap with Salary Negotiation Workshops
AAUW Work Smart and Start Smart are comprehensive salary negotiation workshops for working women and young professionals entering the workforce. In every two-hour workshop, participants will gain confidence in their negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play and learn
In an independent evaluation, 96 percent of women who took an AAUW Work Smart workshop indicated they were extremely likely or somewhat likely to implement concepts learned at the workshop. In addition, over 90 percent of participating women also indicated their workshop attendance would have an extremely likely or somewhat likely impact on their decision to implement the negotiation ideas and concepts they learned.
Based on pre- and post-workshop surveys, women attending the workshop also reported increases in their overall skill and understanding of the principles of AAUW’s negotiation strategy by 98 percent. Similarly, women reported an increase in confidence of 68 percent across the workshop’s components.
