San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women
The San Francisco Commission on the Status of of Women (the Commission) is one of the strongest women’s commissions in the USA. The Commission was founded in 1975 and their focus is supporting equal economic, social, political and educational opportunities for women and girls in San Francisco.
San Francisco Department on the Status of Women
San Francisco is the only city in the United States to have a Department on the Status of Women. In 1998, San Francisco became the first city to adopt the principles of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as a local ordinance.
The Department has three areas of focus in their work:
Friends membership fees and donations support the work of the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women and the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women.

- Conducting victim centered trainings of San Francisco law enforcement personnel on domestic violence response, resulting in zero domestic violence homicides from 2010-2014.
- Partnering with former Mayor Edwin Lee to convene an Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force leading to required anti-human trafficking curriculum in public schools which was ultimately adopted statewide.
- Developing an online tool to measure gender equity in the workplace and recognizing Bay Area employers who implement model practices for supporting women at work.
